CREEDE, COLORADO

We left Pueblo and headed west to South Fork, Colorado. This 143 mile drive took well over three hours because of the mountainous terrain we crossed. We traveled through two passes which were both nearly 9,400 feet high.

Our primary purpose in stopping in South Fork was to be able to take a short 21 mile drive up the Silver Thread Scenic Byway to Creede, an historic old silver mining town. Creede, which now has around 350 permanent residents, is nestled in a beautiful canyon 8,852 feet up in the San Juan Mountains. There were some spectacular views along the drive into Creede, as you can see below. This is not a road we would want to take our 35 foot RV with a car in tow.

We visited the Old Mining Museum and marveled at the various rock specimens shown in the display cases. There were some interesting artifacts to be explored as well.

We thought it interesting that Creede has an underground fire station which was built into the side of the mountain.

After we walked towards town, we looked back and got this amazing view of the cavernous hillside. These cliffs are called the Pillars of Hercules, volcanic cliffs rising nearly a thousand feet at the edge of town.

After walking all around Creede, we thought we deserved a cold beverage so we stopped at Kip's Grill.

Happy Hour at Kip's was a very economical idea. For $15, including tax, we enjoyed four pints (2 each) of Kokanee Lager, a Canadian beer made by Labatts, and potato skins. The potato skins were served with a fresh salsa which really added to the flavor.
