THE TEXAS PANHANDLE

The drive from Dallas to Amarillo is through some very barren territory. For over 300 miles you drive along a 4-lane highway through lots of small towns - blink and you will miss them - to a few bigger towns filled with pickup trucks and folks wearing cowboy hats.
Even though it is not an interstate highway, route 287 has some nice rest areas. The photos below were taken at one of these rest areas.  We were happy to heed the warning!
Texans are proud of their longhorn symbols and their use of a star to represent the "Lone Star State", even at a remote rest stop.
