HEADING WESTWARD THROUGH THE FLORIDA PANHANDLE

Our first planned stop was at Topsail State Park in Santa Rosa Beach along the Gulf Coast of Florida between Panama City and Destin. We pulled in to our campsite in the late afternoon, set up camp and enjoyed a nice dinner. We made plans to take the shuttle to the beach on Tuesday morning to enjoy the white pristine sand that Florida's Gulf Coast is known for.

BUT...Out of a sound sleep - Eek!  What is that screeching alarm?  Where is it coming from?  How do we turn it off?  At around 1:30am, we were awakened by the shrill piercing sound of the LP gas detector telling us we had a propane gas leak in our coach. After shutting off the propane and opening the windows we disconnected the alarm because that was the only way to silence it.

We needed to get the propane system checked out immediately. But we had one more reason to change our plans.  After doing the breakfast dishes, Ann notice a pool of water flowing onto the kitchen floor and living area carpet.  What now!  A water leak under the kitchen sink. So, instead of going to the beach we headed to the Camping World Service Center in Gulf Breeze, about 30 miles west of our location.

Fortunately, the technician at Camping World was able to diagnose the propane situation as a faulty alarm instead of an LP gas leak. They were also able to fix the broken pipe so we got both problems solved in one stop.

We were able to enjoy a nice picnic lunch at a picturesque spot overlooking Navarre Beach. The Navarre Beach Causeway bridge in the picture below leads out to a barrier island. We did go out to the beach after lunch and virtually all of the buildings are new construction since this island was destroyed by a hurricane a few years ago.

We were in a hurry to get to Pensacola to check in to our campground.  It would not be a summer trip without BASEBALL!  We drove to the new Pensacola Municipal Stadium in time for the Pensacola Blue Wahoos game that evening. Finally, some normalcy to this trip!

The City of Pensacola just completed a beautiful new municipal stadium downtown overlooking Pensacola Bay. In the photo below, you can see a marina behind the yellow sign in left-centerfield. They put in a band shell just to the left of the huge scoreboard making the facility multi-purpose. To the right of the scoreboard all the way to the right field foul line is the Coors pavilion, a party area where fans can mingle, sit at high-top tables and look either towards the game or back to the bay.

Paul is pictured below with the Blue Wahoos mascot,Kazoo.

The Blue Wahoos are managed by Jim Riggleman, former skipper of the Washington Nationals. On the night we visited, the Blue Wahoos defeated the Jackson (MS) Generals 5-4. We did see one home run hit over the left field wall into a pretty stiff breeze.
